‘I can buy this part on line and it is so much cheaper, if we do, can you fit it for us?’
Probably, but you should be aware of the pitfalls before you enter into a spiral of issues that conclude in a poor investment!
What do you mean?
Well let us start with the part itself. First, you must be very sure it is the right one! Every part of any system has numerous types or model options within its general description. Every model or type has different characteristics and performs differently, even if they look identical. The ‘year of build’ will also have detail that may be in conflict with the current or even the equivalent/replacement part, resulting in further modification or system alterations. Also; beware ‘cheap copies’ which may neither fit nor work correctly and may even damage other components.
Secondly, you need to be sure the faulty part is the only item that needs to be changed and, charging it alone, will both rectify the problem and not cause consequential issues with other parts of the system.
Thirdly, and assuming the supplier will accept it? You need to keep all the packaging in good order, in case it has to be returned and be sure of all of your costs to do so. The condition of return and their ability to resell it will be taken into account before a replacement or refund is issued!
Fourthly, if returned, will the part be replaced without delay, or sent away for repair or inspection and, if so, how long will you have to wait?
Fifthly, How much and what type of warranty will you get on the part and who will help if it goes wrong? Who will provide the labour and who will pay? (Most manufacturers have a ‘Return-to-Manufacturer’ warranty policy that means you will have to pay for all the costs associated with removal, dispatch, collection and refitting!). Most modern manufacturers are based in Europe and this can cause high shipping costs as well as lengthy delays.
Sixthly, what do you do with your gate system while you are waiting and is the system left in a safe state?
Last, assuming all goes well, what caused the original part to fail and has that cause been satisfactorily addressed?
