How Long Does an Automatic Gate Last
What is life expectancy?
Life expectancy is the estimated amount of time something is expected to last.
No, not quite. With automatic gates, reliability is paramount and regardless of how long all the bits may last, the whole system is useless unless it works and keeps working reliably.
Being trapped in or out of a property, because an electric gate system has failed, produces an immediate need for help or freedom. Manual override is available on all systems, with some easy to use and some just inaccessible. Either way a solution to get the gate back working as fast as possible, is most owners desire.
How long does a gate system last then?
Over many years we have seen examples of good and bad systems, lasting a good while or failing quickly. Some if they are in the right place, at the right time, and are treated well, with lady luck on their side, can last for many years, even if their design or build would suggest otherwise. This, however, is sheer luck and something most of us have in limited supply!
We can say with plenty of facts backing us up, you usually do not get, what you have not paid for, for very long!
What do you mean?
Visually, two systems can look very similar. They can be made of similar products and to an untrained eye, they could be passed off as alike. More detailed inspection would reveal differences 90% of the public would not notice, until it was too late, differences that could have a vast effect upon their cost, worthiness and life expectancy.
A good system that was designed correctly should fulfil a reasonable 15 to 20 years with routine servicing and adequate maintenance. So 15 or more years should be a fair reliable life expectancy, subject to wear & tear and void of damage.
Everyday incidents and an element of expected abuse, either from natural causes, or manmade, should be repairable. Deliberate or accidental damage would be seen as extra over and probably an insurable claim.
Do all systems have this reasonable expectation?
No, unfortunately not and we often come across installations that would struggle to reach up to 5 years. Some are not even worth additional expense even before their warranty has run out, with the original installer claiming it is someone else’s fault and nothing to do with what they fitted.
Daily people make assumptions, some being lucky and some learning from their choice!
