What Is Involved In Automatic Gate Installations?
‘How do you install a typical powered gate system?’
With great care following clear explanation and agreement of what is really needed. We follow a process that allows owners to understand and adapt their investment, while they live the experience.
‘That sounds so corny, what do you mean, live the experience?’
After more than 30 years, we have never come across two identical installations. Something, even very minor, will be different; even with what looks like identical properties, in the same road, built by the same developer.
Two owners living next door to each other, rarely want identical features, function or performance from the same type of installations. Nor do they want associated equipment, such as audio or video systems, etc. identical with all the same settings, extensions and overrides.
Added to this is an almost unlimited choice of products, materials, methods and types of construction. From the civil works, building requirements, gates, support structures, furniture, operators & controls (Command, Safety, Miscellaneous & Communications). Then there are many associated items, such as letterboxes, lighting etc. and finally decoration and in some cases, landscaping etc.
‘So what is your point?’
Most customers buy very few automatic gates and with so many options, deciding upon what is required each time can involve a bit of guess work. A lot of differences in any system are not just the wishes of the owner, but many are influenced by the property and location or environment in which the system is to be installed.
Even with our best advice, owners regularly change their mind, or see issues or simply want alternative options, before the installation is complete.
‘That sounds like a problem!’
No, as long as we have adequate time and major parts are not already built, change can be a good thing. Customers are expected to live with our systems for many years, so we believe the final product should be as right as able. A balance between cost and service, investment and long term satisfaction will always be needed.
Most changes are known to improve the original proposal and service, often saving costs, even if only in the long term, and as most of our installed values are published, customers can stay in control of savings as well as additional spend.
‘What is your process?’
Each project is bespoke, but the general principles are usually subject to how much works are required from us: for general guidance our ‘Typical Programme of Works’ could be used as a reference document and lists the main topics accordingly:

- Civil & Building
- Physical 1st Fix
- Controls & Equipment
- Associated Items & services
- Commission, Test & Hand-over
- Maintenance check to schedule
- Inspection & Report
- Contract agreement proposal issue
All these vary in time scale, but often from enquiry through to handover an installation would progress over 12-16 weeks (plus any authority permissions accordingly).
We may be engaged to undertake all or any part of these works and often work in conjunction with others if required. Please be aware that, naturally expected financial savings can be lost, as different contractors are usually unaware of all that is needed to finalise any project to the standards required.
